 Reading and writing
The mastery of the language is often considered "the key to learning" because it allows for a better understanding of other subjects and enables learning. The use of reading is necessary for high school and postsecondary education. But reading is also essential to participate fully in today’s society, to use the Internet or ATMs and to read magazines, newspapers, prescriptions or ballots... The Partners for Educational Success Estrie (Projet PRÉE) maintains that reading and writing are important elements to take into account in the pursuit of educational success.
Difficulties in reading and writing can lead to dropping out. Extensive research on dropping out and dropout rates demonstrate close links between poor results in reading and writing and an elevated probability of dropping out. A significant number of students in elementary schools in Quebec have learning difficulties with reading and writing, the persistence of which can lead to failure and dropping out. Thus, approximately half of the students, in particular boys, experience major difficulties with writing from the 3rd grade of elementary school.
